ICC confirm sanctions for Jaiswal and Fernando

India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka bowler Asitha Fernando have been sanctioned by the ICC following their incident on the opening day of the second ICC World Test Championship fixture in Colombo.

Both players were found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match).”

As a result, Jaiswal and Fernando were fined 25 per cent of their match fee and were handed one demerit point each.

Both players didn't have any previous offences in the preceding 24-month period.

The incident occurred in the 17th over of India's batting innings after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal. The India batter walked towards Fernando and the two exchanged words, after which Fernando moved his head towards Jaiswal. In response, Jaiswal leant in, resulting in their heads making contact.

Both players admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for formal hearings.

India and Sri Lanka have been locked in an intense battle in the second Test in Colombo.

Rain brought play to a halt in the second session on day 2, with India reaching 475/8 and Dhruv Jurel unbeaten on 95, just five runs away from his second Test century.
