The teams line up ahead of the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup match between Bangladesh and England at Warner Park Sporting Complex on January 16, 2022 in Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Bangladesh 97 all out (35.2 overs); England 98/3 (25.1 overs)

After taking six catches, England wicket-keeper Alex Horton

“It was good to get out there as a team and start the World Cup strongly with a good performance.

“I thought the boys did really well at the top of the order, the bowlers did really well. They were three or four down in the powerplay which is really good.

“It was nice [to get the ball in the gloves early]. We’ve been training for a couple of weeks now but to actually catch a ball in a game is a lot different. The ball went in cleanly for everyone in the field, it was good.

“Mistakes happen, they were 50-odd for nine and they got to 90-odd all out. We kept them under 100 which is a brilliant way to start. Everyone drops catches at the end of the day, but we put in a really good team performance.”

Player of the match, England bowler Josh Boyden

**“**Overall it was pretty good, it’s great to see the lads performing well.

“The perfect way to start the tournament and that’s what we wanted. It’s always nice to get a few wickets but when the lads are performing like that, there’s nothing better.

“Yeah [we were deliberately bowling a full line on and around off stump], we spoke about it before the start of the game. We watched a few clips of their batters and decided full was the right option.

“There’s always a bit of added pressure [bowling first] but that’s just part of the game, it’s good fun.

“We take away the positives we did today and carry them onto the next games.

“My ultimate goal is to play Test cricket and this is just the start of the journey, hopefully!”

Bangladesh captain Rakibul Hasan

“I think we need to look at our batting. As a batting unit we didn’t do well. We have to improve our batting in particular so we can come back strongly in the next game.

“We have some players who can bat well at the end and they showed their character at the end. So, if our main batters are doing well or playing well, then it’s easy for us because we have a very deep batting line-up. So, we can improve our batting and come back strongly in the next match.

“I think we bowled well, because in the second half [of the game] it got a little bit easier to bat but we were fielding and bowling. But I’m happy with the fielding and the bowling, so we need to look at our batting, how we can improve and how we can come back.

“For us, two games remain and we have to win them to cross the line and make it into the next round. We need to play our best cricket to win those games and we are looking forward to it.”

England captain Tom Prest

“I think that’s probably the perfect start, all we could have asked for really.

“For our bowlers to have bowled them out for under 100 is a really good effort and then to go and bat positively and knock off the runs relatively comfortably was really pleasing.

“We were a little bit [surprised with the conditions with the ball], we thought it might spin a bit more than it did. We thought it might break up as well towards the end. But in the end, it was probably a good toss to lose and a very good performance.

“He’s [Josh Boyden] been really good at setting the tone for us in the last couple of series we’ve played. He’s good at swinging the ball at the top of the order, especially to left handers. And Salesy [James Sales] to back him up as well from the other end was really good, a great start.

“We fielded very well, we were fizzing around, throwing the ball into the keeper hard. Fielding has been a big focus of ours recently, so it was pleasing to start off well.

“They started off really well with the ball and then to weather that storm early on, they soon went quiet and we started to dominate with Rewy [James Rew] and Beth [Jacob Bethell] at the end playing a few good shouts. It was a pretty good batting performance.”
