ICC U19 Men's CWC England and Canada quotes
England captain Tom Prest
“Yeah definitely [pleased with the performance] after being put into bat, getting up to 320 was really pleasing for us and to back it up with the ball and bowl them out was a good effort.
“It was a pretty good platform we set, myself and George Thomas I think batted pretty nicely, to set that platform for the last 20 overs for George Bell and then Luxy came in and hit a few good blows as well, it was a pretty good all round batting performance.
“In the back of our minds it was [relaxed atmosphere coming out with the ball], we went out with the intention of trying to defend 120 or 150 to not give them anything and back up our good bowling performance from the last game. We probably let it go a little bit in the middle, maybe bowled a few too many loose balls, but to bowl them out was a pretty good effort.
“Those half chances will need to be taken in tighter games, that we will probably have coming up. Those half chances, catches and run outs we work pretty hard on in training unfortunately didn’t go our way today but hopefully in the next game and moving on.”
On enjoying the England captaincy: “Yeah definitely, it isn’t something that many people can say they have done, a great privilege to be given the captaincy and really enjoying it.”
Canada captain Mihir Patel
“Yes I think so looking at the past couple of games it was always tougher to bat first especially in the morning conditions, it was a fresh pitch with a little bit of grass on it, it was a little soft so I think it was the right decision whether we executed our plans right is a different discussion, but I think it was the right decision to bowl first.
“We weren’t penetrative enough, we weren’t bowling enough wicket taking balls for long enough, we were giving too many loose balls and boundary balls away that was easing up the pressure and we didn’t help ourselves, especially playing against a quality opposition like England.
“We knew the chase was on, it is not the biggest ground here and the pitch was really nice after the sun was on it. The powerplay was decent and then we got ourselves stuck in the middle overs and it became really difficult and we left ourselves with too much at the end. Again, it is a learning curve but I think in the middle if we were able to get some singles and more strike location then it would have been easier for us.
“In patches yes I think, we have lost two that we have played but we have played better cricket than the scoreboard shows. It is a matter of doing better things and the right things for a longer period of time to help us win those games, instead of just playing good patches of cricket, we want to play longer bits of cricket that will help us win a game.”
