India announce new ODI captain for the Australia series
Shubman Gill will lead the squad as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli return play their first international fixture since March.Β
Shubman Gill has been announced as India's new 50-overs captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, to lead the team in the three-match ODI series against Australia that is commencing on October 19.
Gill led India in the ICC World Test Championship series against England to a 2-2 draw, while finishing the series as the highest run-getter with 754 runs at an average of 75.40.
Experienced batters Rohit and Virat Kohli will return to the fold as batters.
Rohit and Kohli haven't been in action at international level since the ICC Champions Trophy event at the start of the year, but the pair will make their return to international cricket during the three-game ODI series against the Aussies that starts in Perth.

Looking back at a spectacular #ChampionsTrophy 2025.
On Jadeja's exclusion from the ODI squad, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar said, "At the moment to take two left-arm spinners to Australia is not possible.
"He is clearly in the scheme of things with how good he is, but there will be some competition for places."
"At the moment we could only carry one and get some balance in the team with Washi (Washington Sundar) and Kuldeep there as well.
"I don't think we are going to need more than that in Australia."

India's T20I squad also features a couple of new additions from their recent Asia Cup win, with Reddy replacing seasoned all-rounder Hardik Pandya in the side, and Washington Sundar also being roped in to the 16-member squad.
Meanwihile, Agarkar also shed some light on Bumrah's selection for the T20I series and his absence in the ODI squad.
"We have already rested him for the one-day games. When we can manage his workload, we will do that.
"Wherever you can give him a break, you will, because we all know how important he is, but we have also got to see what is in the interest of the team.
"Not just him, Siraj bowls a lot of overs as well. There are other guys who do play Test cricket, who will end up having a lot of bowling to do, so we will try and manage all the seamers, so that we minimise the risk of injuries."
The five-match T20I series between India and Australia provides the two teams with some valuable preparation for next year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
