India batter Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury to his left lower rib cage region during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney, the BCCI revealed on Thursday. The 30-year-old remains in Sydney as he continues to receive treatment.

“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation,” the BCCI said in a statement.

“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.”

During the third and final ODI in Sydney between India and Australia, Shreyas Iyer took a stunning running catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling while running back from backward point.

Immediately after the catch, Iyer landed awkwardly, hurting his left lower rib cage, clutching his side in visible pain. He was treated on the field by team medical staff and was subsequently taken off the field.

Iyer had scored 11 and 61 in the first two games respectively, both of which the visitors lost. India notched a nine-wicket win in the final ODI, thanks to a Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli masterclass in the chase, as the hosts sealed the series 2-1.

Iyer is not part of India’s squad for the five-match T20I series Down Under, starting October 29.

India's next scheduled ODI assignment would be the three-match ODI series against South Africa which begins on November 30.
