India v Pakistan: Who has come out on top in the last five matches between the arch rivals?

It is a famous and dramatic cricketing rivalry between the two sides in the T20 International format, and excitement is building ahead of a match that will have huge implications towards the outcome of Group 2 of the Super 12 stage.

Pakistan and India are joined by Bangladesh, South Africa and two of the team from Round 1, and can afford few slip-ups if they are to reach the semi-finals.

The last T20 World Cup meeting between these sides provided stunning drama and caused significant and ultimately fatal damage to India’s chances of making it to the final four.

But it’s not all gone Pakistan’s way in recent years, far from it. We take a look back at the last five matches between the two teams across formats.

The clashes between the two sides in the recent past have become one-sided affairs, but the most recent match between India and Pakistan went down to the wire.

India’s openers got the first innings off to a terrific start, with the score at 54 at the start of the sixth over when Rohit Sharma went for 28.

The pace of scoring slowed through the middle overs, with wickets falling at frequent intervals, but Virat Kohli kept the innings together with a classy half-century.

It wasn’t the fastest of Kohli knocks, and he was run out for 60 from 44 balls in the final over.

A Pakistan attack without Shaheen Shah Afridi put in a team effort, with Shadab Khan the pick of the bowlers with 2/31 from his four overs.

India’s total 181/7 felt like a good score but not ungettable for Pakistan, but the chase did look slightly trickier when Ravi Bishnoi had Babar Azam caught for 14 inside the Powerplay.

A trademark anchor innings rom Mohammad Rizwan kept Pakistan very much in the game, with the opener passing 50 once again before falling for 71 from 51 deliveries in the 17th over.

The rate of scoring had been climbing pretty high through the middle overs, but a quickfire 42 from just 20 balls from Mohammad Nawaz (who had earlier taken 1/25 from four overs) put Pakistan in the driving seat.

And 19 runs from the penultimate over, bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, effectively ended the contest. It was Asif Ali with 16 (8) who took his side to the brink of victory. And although he was dismissed in the final over, Khushdil Shah and Iftikhar Ahmed saw their team across the line, with Iftikhar sealing the win with one delivery to spare.

The second game of the Asia Cup lived up to its billing and India came out victors in a tense, closely-fought encounter, the first of two meetings between the two at the tournament.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar drew first blood with the wicket of Babar Azam in the early stages. Fakhar Zaman too fell in the last over of the Powerplay before Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed stitched a 45-run stand for the third wicket but the former looked far from his fluent best.

Hardik Pandya broke the back of Pakistan's innings with a short ball barrage accounting for three wickets in his two overs. A couple of big hits from Shahnawaz Dahani towards the end helped his side to a respectable total of 147.

Youngster Naseem Shah couldn't have asked for a better T20I debut as he struck off the second ball of the innings to send KL Rahul back for a golden duck. The Pakistan bowlers were on the money and made it difficult for the duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to score freely. India lost both their star players in a span of eight balls as Rohit and Kohli fell in their attempt to accelerate against the spin of Mohammad Nawaz.

To counter the leg spin and left-arm spin in Pakistan's ranks, Ravindra Jadeja was promoted up the order. Along with Suryakumar Yadav, he added 36 runs for the fourth wicket to keep India within reach. At the fall of Suryakumar's wicket, India needed 59 from 34 when Hardik Pandya came out to bat.

Having already delivered with the ball, Hardik gave a measure of his brilliant all-round ability – this time with the bat in hand. He smashed Haris Rauf for three boundaries in the penultimate over to bring the equation down to 7 off 6. Though India lost Jadeja off the first ball of the final over, Hardik finished things off in style with a six to get India's campaign up and running.

India will not have the fondest memories of the Dubai International Stadium when they step on the field in their Asia Cup opener. It was on this very ground that they suffered their first-ever loss to Pakistan in a World Cup match, with Babar Azam's men scripting a memorable win over their arch-rivals.

Shaheen Afridi was unplayable in his opening spell, accounting for the wickets of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul with two rippers. The partnership between Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant held India's innings together, with the former going on to make yet another fifty against Pakistan.

Unfortunately, the rest of the batting failed as India stumbled their way to 151/7 in 20 overs.

In reply, Pakistan romped their way to the target with all 10 wickets to spare. The opening pair of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan was in cruise control throughout the innings as they stitched an unbeaten 152-run partnership to register a famous win over India.

The two teams clashed on the biggest stage amidst pomp and pageantry but the clash failed to live up to its lofty expectations as India got the better of Pakistan in a rather one-sided contest.

With a hundred and a fifty in the previous games of the tournament, Rohit Sharma was in the mood against Pakistan and put on a clinic with the bat in hand. The bowlers were all at sea at the star Indian batter and found it impossible to breach the fort as Rohit smashed a 113-ball 140.

Half-centuries from KL Rahul and Virat Kohli propelled India to a massive score, setting Pakistan a daunting target of 337.

After losing the early wicket of Imam-ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam steadied the ship and were starting to look dangerous with their century partnership. It took a special delivery from Kuldeep Yadav to breach the defence of Babar, which turned out to be a turning point in the game.

Wickets fell in heaps thereafter and Pakistan, chasing 302 in 40 overs in a rain-reduced game, only managed to 212/6 as India extended their unbeaten run in the 50-over World Cup against their arch-rivals to 7-0.

India and Pakistan faced off for the second time in the Asia Cup in 2018 and the result was just as one-sided as the first game.

Pakistan were put on the back foot by the early wickets before skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed and Shoaib Malik held fort together with a 107-run stand for the fourth wicket. Malik finished as the top-scorer with 78 and a few lusty blows in the end from Asif Ali helped Pakistan post a competitive total of 237/7.

In reply, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan scored a century each and wiped off 210 runs of the target with their opening stand. The run-out of Shikhar Dhawan was the only reason for celebration for Pakistan as India romped home with nine wickets and more than 10 overs to spare.
