In the first ODI in Dubai, Afridi produced a fine all-round displays to help Pakistan go 1-0 up in the five-match series. He first snared 6 for 38 in ten overs to restrict Australia to 168 for 38.5 overs, and then hammered five fours in his 16-ball 24 to help Pakistan win by four wickets.

In the first One-Day International in Guyana, Pakistan was in deep trouble at 47 for 5. Afridi changed the tone of the match with his belligerent 76 off 55 balls, including six fours and five sixes, as Pakistan raced to 244 for 9 in 50 overs. He followed it up 7 for 12 in nine overs to bowl West Indies out for 98 in 41 overs. It remains one of the great all-round performances in ODI history
