Ireland appoint former batter as men's high-performance batting coach

Ed Joyce joins the Ireland men’s senior side as their high-performance batting coach, after spending nearly six years at the helm for the women’s side as their head coach before stepping down in early 2025.  

Joyce, regarded as one of the best batsmen to come out of the Irish cricket system, enjoyed an illustrious career with the national setup between 2011 and 2018.

The experienced batter recorded 5,552 runs at a batting average of 40.82, with 10 centuries and 29 half-centuries.  

As head coach of Ireland Women, Joyce facilitated a progressive and successful period, securing shock wins against opponents like South Africa and Australia and qualifying for the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.    

“Once I retired from playing, staying involved in Irish cricket was a high priority for me.

The head coach role with Ireland Women was a great experience and I enjoyed the day-to-day aspect of working with players on developing and improving their techniques and mindset," Joyce noted.

He returns on refined role focusing on specialised batting coaching and the male pathway programme. He aims to use his wide experience across both genders to prepare him for success in his new role.  

“When I look at the Ireland Men’s side over recent years, it’s obvious to see the amount of hard work that has gone on behind-the-scenes in preparing our players to be competitive on the international stage. 

“I look forward to getting involved in this work and perhaps adding some insights and knowledge to push the batting group forward. The talent is there; the goal is now consistency. 

“Thanks to Graeme [West] and Wils [head coach Gary Wilson] for this opportunity – it’s always a pleasure pulling on the shamrock, and I have learnt to never take these opportunities for granted.”

Joyce’s expertise will face a challenge when the Ireland Men’s side begin their hunt for ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027 qualification.
