Ireland name Trott as consultant before Afghanistan series
The former Afghanistan head coach has been named in an interim role ahead of the upcoming home assignment.
Cricket Ireland on Tuesday, July 14, confirmed the appointment of Jonathan Trott in a short-term consultancy role with the Ireland men’s squad starting next week.
Trott, who stepped down as the Afghanistan head coach following their Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, will be with the Ireland squad for 14 days, advising their preparations for the home series against Afghanistan.
Trott’s tenure with Afghanistan saw him guide the team to unprecedented heights, which included a first-ever Men’s T20 World Cup semi-finals finish in 2024.

Ireland will host the Afghanistan side for five ODIs starting August 5 in Bready.
While Trott will help the team in their pre-series preparations, his time with the squad will also involve advising the side on matchdays for the first and second ODI.
The appointment is one that Ireland believe will also help them in their preparations for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier in early 2027.
“This is a rare opportunity to bring a world-class coach into the senior team environment offering a wealth of current knowledge on the opposition,” Graeme West, Director of High Performance at Cricket Ireland said.
“Having worked with the Afghanistan squad, Jonathan is perfectly placed to support our strategic planning for the series, providing our players and staff with a new perspective - expanding their skills, knowledge and understanding of 50-over cricket.”
Ireland will kickstart their five-match ODI series against Afghanistan on August 5.
