Jayasuriya farewell proves an anti-climax

Sri Lankan cricket legend Sanath Jayasuriya's controversial farewell to his international career ended in a disappointing fashion here on Tuesday as he made just two runs in the first ODI against England.

The former captain and now a Sri Lankan lawmaker - who will be 42 on Thursday - was controversially selected for the one-day leg of Sri Lanka's tour of England following political pressure to ensure he received a fitting send-off from the international game.

However, he said he would only play in last Saturday's Twenty20 and the first one day international.

Jayasuriya - a member of the 1996 World Cup winning side - took a wicket in England's innings but any thoughts of a glorious innings to bring the curtain down on his career were swiftly terminated when he was caught by Eoin Morgan off Tim Bresnan.

He was given a standing ovation as he left the pitch.
