Jayawardene and Mathews rescue Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka gained a first-innings lead of 26 on the second day of the first Test against New Zealand in Galle.
Replying to 221, the hosts were reduced to 50-5 before Mahela Jayawardene (91) and Angelo Mathews (79) added 156 for the sixth wicket.
Another flurry of wickets then saw the last five go down for 41 runs as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 247.
Pace bowler Tim Southee (4-46) did the early damage before spinner Jeetan Patel (3-55) was chiefly responsible for mopping up the tail.
Rangana Herath added to his five-wicket haul in New Zealand?s first innings by claiming an early in their second when he dismissed Brendon McCullum for 13.
Martin Guptill (13 not out) and Kane Williamson (9 not out) saw New Zealand to the close on 35-1, leading by nine runs.
