Jersey batter creates history with Challenge League innings

Asa Tribe hit the highest score in the history of the Challenge League competition to help Jersey to another impressive victory.

Young Jersey batter Asa Tribe broked a three-year ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League record by scoring the highest individual score in the history of the event.

Tribe smashed a brilliant 175 for Jersey during their massive ICC CWC Challenge League A victory over Papua New Guinea at St Martin, surpassing the previous best of 141 that teammate Nick Greenwood managed against Italy in 2022.

The 21-year-old came to the crease with his team in trouble at 3/1 and things looked grim when they fell to 15/4 in the fourth over, but he continued to score freely to help Jersey post a total of 261 that proved way too much for Papua New Guinea as they were all out for 101 in reply.

Tribe smashed 19 fours and four massive sixes during his 156-ball stay and continued the golden run for the right-hander, who had scored consecutive List A centuries for Glamorgan earlier in the week.

"I feel like my batting's in a good spot at the moment," Tribe told BBC Radio Jersey post-match

"I'm happy to do that for Glamorgan twice and then come and perform over here for Jersey."

The victory saw Jersey cement their spot at the top of the Challenge League A standings, with the side on target to book a spot at the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-off ahead of the next edition of the 50-over tournament in South Africa and Zimbabwe in 2027.

Tribe knows there is plenty of things that need to go right for Jersey if they are to earn a place at the next World Cup and is happy to stay patient and continue his rich vein of form.

"I think it's about riding the wave as well, because there's plenty of times in cricket when it doesn't go very well or you get a stinker from the umpire or just the luck isn't on your side," Tribe noted.

"I'm more than happy with how my cricket's going at the moment."

Jersey now take on Qatar in the final match of their current schedule and Tribe said it was important for the side to continue their winning momentum.

"I think it's really important that we just keep winning, keep taking that momentum forward with our last game, hopefully, and then take that into the third round of this competition," he added.
