The father of fellow 2022 Champion, Kishwar Chowdhury, Kamrul has played an important role in the Bangladeshi community in Melbourne for many years. Before moving to Melbourne in the 1970s and becoming the Managing Director at PNS Graphics Australia, as well as a social worker, Kamrul was a former freedom fighter of the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh.

In 2019 he was recognised for his work in the Bangladeshi community, receiving an esteemed, OAM. He was the President of Bangladesh Samity for five years, donated a bus to the Western Region Mobile Library and made various donations to the Bangladeshi Community Foundation as well as being a Patron of the Western Region Bangla School.
