Cricket Australia announced on Wednesday, 27 February, that the 28-year-old felt some pain during the training session leading up to Australia's three-wicket victory in the first Twenty20 International at Visakhapatnam. He did not play that game.

“Kane reported some left side pain at training prior to the opening T20I in Vizag," said David Beakley, the team physiotherapist. "Unfortunately he has not recovered well enough in order to play a further part in the tour. Kane will return home to continue his rehabilitation, and we monitor his progress over the coming weeks.”

White-ball specialist Andrew Tye has been named Richardson's replacement for the tour. He played in the T20I home series against India last year, claiming two scalps in as many games.

The second and final T20I will be played in Bengaluru on February 27, which will be followed by a five-match one-day international series.
