He has now been released from hospital, to the relief of Sri Lankans and cricket fans alike, and Cricket Sri Lanka has released a statement regarding his status.

"Dimuth has been discharged from Canberra hospital following assessment and all cleared. A further update will be provided on his playing status tomorrow prior to play," the statement read.

The incident occurred in the 31st over of the Sri Lankan innings. Cummins' angled bouncer was clocked at 142 kmph, and despite Karunaratne's attempts to move away from the line of the ball, he couldn't evade it.

He immediately fell to the ground and required lengthy treatment from the medical staff of both teams. They were quick to attend to the batsman, and he was seen speaking and moving his hands on the field.

He was put in a neck brace, and stretchered off the ground before being moved to the emergency van, which rushed him to the hospital.

Cricket Australia then provided an update on Twitter, saying, "Dimuth complained of pain in neck and tingling to his hands following being struck in the back of the neck, decision then made to transport him to hospital where he is currently being assessed. Updates will be provided when more is known."

Karunaratne looked solid in the middle during his 84-ball knock. He scored 46 runs, and had carried Sri Lanka to 82/0 in response to Australia's first-innings total of 534/5 declared.

After Karunaratne retired hurt, Sri Lanka lost three wickets before stumps, and finished the day on 123/3, trailing Australia by 411 runs.
