Last ball thriller in 'World Cup'
The reason for organising the first Viennese Cricket World Cup (26/27 June) was to provide two days of exciting cricket and cultural activities to the cricket teams as well as the cricket fans in Austria. The main aim was to generate a high standard of cricket to boost Austrian cricket, which was achieved beyond all expectation.
The initial group matches started on a beautiful Saturday morning, competing teams being England, Sri Lankan Blues, India, Austria, Sri Lankan Reds and Pakistan. A special thanks goes out to Chief Guest, the honourable Sri Lankan Ambassador, his Excellency Dr. D.L. Mendis and his wife, who was very much impressed with the idea of having world Cup in Vienna and promised his support to Cricket and future Tournaments at the Austria Cricket Stadium.
The first day ended with a Gala Dinner, with a special thanks to Mrs. Helga Nadarajah, treasurer of the Club, for her organisation and work and the soft drinks were sponsored by Steve Dwobeng from Coca Cola. The feature of the second day was the eagerly awaited semi finals which got Under way with the Sri Lankan Reds team meeting the Pakistan Whites team and a second semi final featured the Pakistan Green v Sri Lankan Blues.
The thrilling Final was contested between Sri Lankan Reds and Pakistan and came down to Pakistan needing 1 run from the last ball. They achieved this and were crowned the first Viennese World Cup Champions. At the end of the thrilling final, a presentation ceremony was held to thank all who participated and supported the event.
The Chairman of Austria Cricket Club Wien and Organiser of the Tournament Mr. Siva Nadarajah also promised to make the event an even bigger success next year by attracting sponsors for all participating teams.
