Life in the fast lane – Alzarri Joseph

Alzarri Joseph

Alzarri Joseph may only be 21 years old but he has already shown he has the capabilities to be a future star. The Antiguan shot to prominence at the 2016 edition of the ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup, taking 13 wickets at an average of just 13.76, with best figures of 4/30, to propel the West Indies to the title in Dhaka.

Joseph has a strong action, generates brisk pace, and has the ability to move the ball off the seam, which are all ingredients that make him a tricky prospect to face – as the batsmen in Bangladesh found out for themselves. The West Indies put an early defeat by England behind them, beating Fiji and Zimbabwe, before edging past Pakistan and hosts Bangladesh to reach the final against India, with Joseph chipping away with wickets and keeping his economy down throughout.

Joseph showed his class in the final, taking the first three wickets – including the dangerous Rishabh Pant – to help bowl India out for 145, which his batsmen then chased down to claim the trophy.

Alzarri Joseph looks back at his CWC memories

"During the tournament I learned you have to take every opportunity you get, use it to the best of your ability and make every chance count," Joseph told ICC.

He certainly did that. His performances did not go unnoticed in the West Indies and the right-arm pace bowler was called up five months later to make his Test debut against the same opposition in Saint Lucia. But it was at the Oval on 27 September 2017 where he really announced himself, dismissing England's top order of Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan and Sam Billings to return a maiden five-wicket haul of 5/56.

It is still early days, but with Dale Steyn as a hero and Antiguan role models like Andy Roberts and Curtly Ambrose to follow, we are likely to see plenty more from Alzarri Joseph.

With the next Under 19 World Cup just around the corner, who can follow in Joseph's footsteps and make a name for themselves next?

The ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand gets underway on Saturday 13 January.
