Marcus Trescothick extends stay at Somerset to 27th year

Trescothick

The 42-year-old made his debut for the county, incredibly, in 1993, and has since scored 26,018 runs in 384 first-class matches for the side. He also holds Somerset records for first-class centuries (52) and List A runs (7374).

Over the years, the former England opener who played 76 Tests between 2000 and 2006, has seen it all, but says he still has the drive for more. โ€œI'm delighted to have signed for at least another year,โ€ he said after signing the contract.

โ€œI still have the drive, passion and energy to want to get better and strive to perform for the team. I've always said that I want to continue to play for Somerset for as long as possible and that feeling has not changed.

"We've made good progress in the County Championship and other competitions this season, and I'm excited for what is to come for the club when you look at the combination of youth and experience within the squad.โ€

So far in the 2018 County Championship Division One, Trescothick has scored 491 runs in 10 matches at 27.27, including a century and three half-centuries.

In Somersetโ€™s ongoing fixture against Nottinghamshire, Trescothick scored a 71 in the first innings, with Notts being made to follow-on by stumps on the second day.

โ€œWhen you think of Somerset County Cricket Club, you think of Marcus Trescothick,โ€ said Andy Hurry, the countyโ€™s Director of Cricket. โ€œHis work ethic is second to none and you simply can't measure what he brings to the club behind the scenes and in the dressing room. He is the epitome of what a professional sportsman should be.

"We had a number of discussions throughout the season and he made it very clear that he still has the drive and he wants to continue playing whilst he can still positively impact games."
