Mominul ton frustrates New Zealand

Mominul Haque hit an unbeaten ton and put on a record stand with Tamim Iqbal as Bangladesh fought its way back into the second Test against New Zealand and took an overall lead of 114 runs in Dhaka on Thursday (October 24).

Bangladesh was 269 for 3 in its second innings at stumps on the fourth day with Shakib Al Hasan and Mominul at the crease.

Mominul led Bangladesh's batting charge with an unbeaten 126, making him only the second Bangladesh batsman to score consecutive Test centuries after Tamim's feat at Lord's and Old Trafford against England in 2010.

Mominul batted solidly and displayed no sign of nerves until he got stuck on 99 for 11 balls. He eventually reached his hundred with a boundary off Neil Wagner. Tamim played a patient knock of 70 off 218 balls before Ross Taylor pulled off a stunning one-handed catch at slip off Kane Williamson. Mominul and Tamim added 157 runs after Wagner struck twice in the first session to leave the hosts struggling on 55 for 2.

Wagner, who claimed 5 for 64 in the first innings, scalped Anamul Haque, caught by Peter Fulton at slip for 22, before Marshall Ayub was caught at slip by Taylor for nine.

Earlier, New Zealand resumed its first innings on 419 for 8 and managed to add just 18 runs before being bowled out for 437. Mominul ran out Ish Sodhi for 58 and Abdur Razzak then trapped Trent Boult lbw to wrap up the innings.
