Morgan calls for consistency in England’s T20 World Cup campaign
As the rest of the world marvelled at a West Indian World Cup win against all the odds in 2016, England responded to their heart-breaking defeat by forming an all-conquering white ball outfit. Claiming the Cricket World Cup in 2019 at home, England can complete a rare double, all while righting the wrongs of that night in Kolkata.
England’s storyline is already rather poetic. Having to wait an extra year for the tournament to begin, they cross paths again with the West Indies in their first match of the tournament on October 23.
For Morgan, the significance of the tournament has only grown over time, and his side are champing at the bit to go one better in 2021.
“The evolution of T20 cricket and the role it’s played in our great game is hugely significant for the development of the game and the popularity of the game.
“It’s huge. It’s been a long time coming. We haven’t had one since 2016.”
T20WC: Morgan banking on England's consistency
History beckons for the English, who have the chance to become the first men’s team to hold both the Cricket World Cup and the T20 World Cup at the same time. To go where no team has gone before, Morgan stresses the need for his team to play in the same vein it has over the last two years, knowing that only their best will be enough against world class talent.
“I think our biggest strength is the consistency which we’ve performed at over the last two years.”
“I think in T20 cricket because the game can change quite quickly and there’s a huge group of talented teams within our group, I think every game is important to us.”
While boasting an imperious home record, England have not featured in T20I action in UAE since 2015, and for Morgan, adapting to the foreign conditions and utilising them to best effect in UAE will be the final ingredient for success.
“I think we’re gathering momentum nicely, and I think the important side to that from our perspective is that we’re continuously trying to get better and learn as we go on, simply because the tournament is held away from home.
“We’re really looking forward to it.”
