Nadi Stun Suva In Big Upset in Fiji
Nadi Jetsetter caused the upset of the tournament by beating Suva Flying Angels on day 4 of the Fiji Women?s National Cricket Championships at the Army Barracks Ground.
Winless from their first two games, the Jetsetters bounced back to beat a previously undeafeated Suva by 56 runs thanks to a strong bowling performance by Makelesi Mada and Mareta Vuadreu.
Nadi batted first and scored 98 before being dismissed in the 26th over. Makereta top scored with an unbeaten 12, but the Suva bowlers were wayward bowling far too many wides which helped inflate the Jetsetters score.
Ruci Kaiwai took four wickets while Sera Kaukiono and Luanne Rika claimed three wickets each, but the wides ended up being one of the differences come the end of the game.
Having posted a defendable total Nadi then went about their business in the field with enthusiasm as they searched for their first win of the tournament.
It wasn't long before the wickets started tumbling and at 4 for 31 a win for Nadi looked on the cards. Vuadreu (4 for 19) was the main wicket taker at the top of the order, claiming three of the top six batters to leave Suva staring defeat in the face.
Mada (4 for 4 from four overs) cleaned up the tail with the assistance of a spectacular run out where the fielder hit the stumps with a direct throw with only one stump to aim at.
In the end the Angels were dismissed for just 42 to leave their title ambitions in tatters.
At Suva Grammar Moce Islanders recorded their third win of the tournament beating Lomary Schoolies by five wickets.
Lomary won the toss and elected to bat but were dismissed for a paltry 35 thanks to some good bowling and excellent catching by the Islanders.
Mereia Tilau was the star with the ball taking 8 wickets for just 20 runs, while Silipa Tikosaya claimed the other two Lomary wickets.
With a small total to chase Moce reached their target with ease to record a win with two bonus points. Marica Vua was the best of the Lomary bowlers taking 2 for 13.
Friday is the final day of the tournament and will feature what should be one of the best games of the Championship when Suva play Moce at Suva Grammar, while Nadi will play Veimataqali at the Army Barracks Ground.
Suva will no doubt be looking to bounce back from today's loss while moce will be looking for an undefeated tournament to win Fiji's first National Women's Championship.
