Knocked out in the group stage of the 2024 edition, the Black Caps have bounced back in style at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. With five wins and two losses across the tournament, they now stand one victory away from a maiden title. They will go up against India in the final - the same opponent that defeated them in the Champions Trophy 2025 decider.

New Zealand began their campaign with a composed chase against Afghanistan after navigating a nervy start.

What followed was a spectacular exhibition from the Kiwi opening pair. Tim Seifert and Finn Allen attacked from the outset, unleashing a barrage of boundaries in a breathtaking partnership.
Their unbeaten 175-run stand is now the second-highest opening partnership in T20 World Cup history, with Seifert smashing 89 off 42 and Allen stitching 84 off 50 to seal the win in an emphatic fashion.

New Zealand faced their first major test against an unbeaten South African side in Ahmedabad.
Early strikes from Marco Jansen left them reeling at 58/3 in the powerplay. Mark Chapman’s fluent 48 off 26, alongside Daryl Mitchell’s steady contribution of 32 from 24 balls, helped the Black Caps recover and post a competitive 175/7.
However, South Africa’s chase was largely decided in the Powerplay. Captain Aiden Markram led the charge alongside Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton, punishing wayward bowling to guide the Proteas to a comfortable victory.

South Africa bossed their contest against New Zealand, securing a big win in Ahmedabad.
New Zealand returned to winning ways with a commanding chase against Canada, though the match was headlined by a remarkable ton from 19-year-old Yuvraj Samra.
Samra produced a stunning century to become the youngest player to score a hundred in Men's T20 World Cup history, putting on a 116-run opening partnership with skipper Dilpreet Bajwa to power Canada to a competitive total of 173/4.
But New Zealand’s response was clinical. After early wickets in the powerplay, Rachin Ravindra (59 off 39) and Glenn Phillips (76 off 36) launched a devastating counter-attack. Their unbeaten 146-run partnership dismantled the Canadian bowling attack and sealed victory with nearly five overs to spare.
New Zealand progressed comfortably to the Super 8 stage after three impressive chases and only one defeat in the group stage.

But just as the co-hosts seemed in control, Cole McConchie (31 from 23) and Mitchell Santner (47 from 26) orchestrated a remarkable recovery, adding crucial runs as New Zealand piled on 70 runs in the final four overs.
The bowlers then took control. Matt Henry struck early before New Zealand’s spinners dominated proceedings. Rachin Ravindra then starred with four wickets as Sri Lanka struggled against 17 overs of spin to fall well short.
This win boosted their net run rate significantly, which proved crucial in the qualification race.

The pacers provided the dream start to strike in consecutive overs to reduce England to 2/2 in the first 8 balls. New Zealand tightened the screws further with excellent bowling and fielding when the equation read to defend 54 from 19 balls.
Then came a sensational match-winning late onslaught from Will Jacks (32 from 18) and T20 World Cup debutant Rehan Ahmed (19 off 7) that turned the game around as England snatched victory in the closing overs.

Allen went on to produce a historic innings, smashing the fastest century in Men’s T20 World Cup history off just 33 balls, eclipsing Chris Gayle’s previous record. He fittingly finished the chase with a boundary over mid-off as New Zealand stormed into the final with nine wickets in hand.
