Nurse comes in for Badree for England T20I
Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard – both missing from the Windies One-Day International setup – have been called up for the one-off Twenty20 International against England, the selection panel announced on Friday (September 1).
Ashley Nurse, the offspinner who last played a T20I in January 2015, has been selected in place of Samuel Badree, the legspinner, who missed out because of a “prior commitment”, according to a Cricket West Indies statement.
Having made his T20I debut in April 2011 against Pakistan in Gros Islet, Nurse doesn’t have a single wicket in the format after four games, and has gone without a wicket in the two games he has played for Trinbago Knight Riders in the 2017 Caribbean League so far, though he has been very economical.
The 13-man side also included Ronsford Beaton, the uncapped seamer from Guyana who has picked up 37 wickets in 43 T20s over the years.
Carlos Brathwaite will continue to lead the side that also has Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels.
“We have a good mix of experience and youth that should adapt to English conditions quickly,” said Courtney Browne, the chairman of selectors. “Coming off the series win against India in the Caribbean in July our expectations is to see the team play a highly competitive game and bring that T20 Caribbean atmosphere to England.”
The last time these two teams met in a T20I was in the final of the World T20 2016 in Kolkata when Brathwaite blasted Ben Stokes for four sixes in the final over to seal the deal for Windies.
The match will be played at Chester-le-Street on September 16 at the end of the three-Test series, which is level at 1-1 following Windies’ remarkable win in the second Test at Headingley.
Squad: Carlos Brathwaite (capt), Ronsford Beaton, Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis, Jason Mohammed, Sunil Narine, Ashley Nurse, Kieron Pollard, Rovman Powell, Marlon Samuels, Jerome Taylor, Chadwick Walton (wk), Kesrick Williams.
