#OnTheUp: Football, tennis, and good ol' cricket

There is just one place to start โ€“ the Fifa World Cup 2018. The final of the grand event took place on Sunday, 15 July, with France seeing off Croatia 4-2.

Cricketers, for once, set aside their love for the sport of bat and ball, and allowed space for another.

And they seemed to enjoy it, as evidenced by Harbhajan Singhโ€™s all-caps display of excitement.

Others found subtler ways to congratulate France on winning their second World Cup.

And while France were deserving champions, there were plenty of plaudits for Croatia too. Theirs has been a wonderful underdog story, and we cricket folk like nothing better than one of those.

There was admittance that one of sportโ€™s great spectacles had lived up to the hype โ€ฆ

โ€ฆ but there were also some little moments of โ€˜my game is better than yoursโ€™.

We also had a new entrant to the MRF Tyres ICC Rankings for Test Batsmen, and this player, remarkably, shot straight up to the top of the list.

Look at the name, and see that forward defence, and you wonโ€™t have questions as to why.

Of course, cricketโ€™s own GOAT, and a certified tennis fan, weighed in with his analysis.

And so โ€ฆ Mutual Admiration Society.

Thatโ€™s all well and good, but how will this Federer chap fare against Stuart Broad?

Especially with Broad already setting sights on the top of his off stump?

Unfortunately, we might never know.

Elsewhere, Mahendra Singh Dhoni put behind a tough afternoon on the field to bring up his 10,000th run in one-day internationals โ€“ a mind-boggling feat for a batsman who has featured in the lower middle-order for most of his career.

Other greats recognised the achievement.

India won the T20I series against England 2-1, and there was the distinct smell of โ€˜teamโ€™ spirit.

Morne Morkel surprised many by retiring from international cricket a few months ago, and he is still full of surprises.

And Dean Jonesโ€™s sumptuous breakfast was ruined by the antics of a bunch of sweaty people working out.
