‘Our batsmen set the tone with a 500+ score’ – Mehidy
Windies crumbled in desperate fashion to Mehidy, having no answers to his fizzing off-spin across both their innings, as he collected record figures of 12/117, surpassing his haul of 12/159 against England in October 2016.
A combination of excellent bowling from Mehidy and poor shot selection from the Windies saw him collect seven wickets in the first-innings. At times, one could have felt sorry for the Windies batsmen, in particular Shai Hope, who was bowled playing back on his crease by a skidding delivery that kept horribly low. On other occasions the visitors had only themselves to blame – Shiron Hetmyer offered a simple return catch to Mehidy to depart as the first Windies victim on day three.

Mehidy ran through the batting line-up in the morning to finish with innings figures of 7/58, and continued to make merry in the second-innings taking 5/59. While Hetmyer learned from his error in the first-innings to compile a blistering 93 from 92 balls, he was to be denied a Test century by the young off-spinner, who collected nine wickets on the final day.
Speaking after the match Mehidy deflected attention from himself by crediting his bowling colleagues, as well as the efforts of the batting-line up.
“My teammates have been really supportive. Our bowlers did really well - especially Taijul and Shakib. Nayeem supported really well to,” said Mehidy.
At the end of the day we did very well and we have been successful. I love batting too, and our batsmen set the tone with a 500+ score, so that made the job easier for the bowlers.”
The 21-year old record-breaker now has 84 Test wickets from just 18 matches at an average of 29.78, and is already fourth in Bangladesh’s all-time wicket-taking list.
With age on his side, it is likely that he will continue to break records for his country.
