Overton and Trescothick script unique county hat-trick

Notts were following on in the County Championship Division One game, 119/3 after having conceded a 330-run first-innings lead to Somerset.

On came Overton for the 41st over, bowling to opener Ben Slater, who was on 49. Overton squared Slater up and found the edge, which went straight to Trescothick at second slip, and Notts were 119/4.

The next two deliveries, to Samit Patel and Riki Wessels, earned straight edges, both to Trescothick’s safe hands in the slips, and Notts were suddenly 119/6. They folded for 184, with Overton picking up 3/68, as Somerset won by an innings and 146 runs.

The last time such an event had taken place in England, an outfielder taking a hat-trick, was back in 1914, when George Thompson of Northamptonshire pulled it off.

Interestingly, Somerset captain Tom Abell, only an occasional medium pacer, had returned a hat-trick in the Notts first innings.
