Padikkal tons up again as India dominate Day 1 in Colombo
Devdutt Padikkal scored a hundred for the second game in a row to put India in a strong position against Sri Lanka.
India assumed a position of strength at the end of the first day of the second World Test Championship match between India and Sri Lanka at Colombo, thanks to a century by Devdutt Padikkal, who carried his fine form from the previous game in Galle, as the visitors ended the day at 300/5.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) ground, India faced immediate challenges against a disciplined Sri Lankan pace attack.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul safely navigated the initial overs, adding 37 runs for the opening stand. Lahiru Kumara removed Rahul for 18, safely caught behind by Niroshan Dickwella to deal India the first blow of the morning.
Jaiswal looked aggressive and confident at the other end, striking nine boundaries in a brisk 45 before an excellent delivery from Asitha Fernando shattered his stumps.
Captain Shubman Gill and Devdutt Padikkal then orchestrated a brilliant recovery, keeping the hosts at bay with a watchful yet decisive 120-run partnership for the third wicket.
Showing immense patience, the duo weathered probing spells from the pacers and the left-arm spin of Prabath Jayasuriya. Gill, leading by example, brought up a composed half-century in 108 balls, anchoring the innings with a blend of solid defence and calculated aggression. His resilient knock was eventually ended by Fernando, caught behind on the stroke of Tea for 50.
Unfazed by the loss of his skipper, Padikkal blossomed in the final session, transitioning smoothly from accumulator to enforcer. He drove and pulled his way to a magnificent 117 off 193 deliveries, an innings beautifully studded with 12 boundaries. His masterful century completely frustrated the Sri Lankan bowling unit and laid a formidable foundation for the visitors.
India suffered a blow when Rishabh Pant was forced to retire hurt after adding just three runs on the board after a short ball hit his wrists. That brought the veteran Ravindra Jadeja to the crease, who showcased all his experience at a crucial juncture for India.
Jadeja provided excellent support down the order, contributing a crucial 43 off 83 balls.
Keshara Nuwantha claimed the prized wicket of Padikkal, castling the centurion to secure his maiden Test wicket, while Fernando returned after Sri Lanka took the new ball to claim his third scalp of the day by dismissing Jadeja.
At stumps, Dhruv Jurel (7*) and debutant Saransh Jain (4*) remained unbeaten, guiding India to a strong 300/5 in 85 overs. For Sri Lanka, Fernando was the undisputed standout performer with impressive figures of 3/46 in his 16 overs.
As Day 2 approaches, India will look to maximise their commanding first-innings total, while the hosts will desperately seek early morning breakthroughs to wrest the initiative back in their favour.
