James Pattinson enjoyed a dream debut as Australia secured a comfortable nine wicket over New Zealand in the opening Test.

Pattinson ripped out the heart of New Zealand's top order in the opening session, capturing three wickets in the space of just four balls, with Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor, all falling.

Pattinson then claimed his fifth wicket, to reduce New Zealand to 28-5, when Doug Bracewell fell.

Nathan Lyon then cleaned up New Zealand's tail, taking 3-19, to leave him with seven wickets for the match.

Needing just 18 to win, Phil Hughes fell early, before David Warner completed victory smashing 12 not out from just four balls.

The next Test begins at Hobart on Friday.
