Ireland captain Paul Stirling has been ruled out of the remainder of the ODI series against Namibia after breaking the ring finger on his left hand while fielding in the previous match, Namibia secured a 63-run victory to take a 2-1 lead in the five match series.

Stirling sustained the injury in the 15th over of the third ODI while stationed at short cover. Attempting to take a low catch off a powerful cut shot from Namibia batter Jan Frylinck, the Ireland skipper dived forward, with the ball striking his fingertip and causing the fracture. He did not come out to bat for Ireland.

A hospital assessment later that evening confirmed the extent of the injury.

The 35-year-old will return home for recovery and rehabilitation, leaving Ireland without their experienced captain for the final two matches of the series.

Lorcan Tucker will take the reins as skipper for the final two fixtures of the ODI series.

Ireland skipper Paul Stirling goes full stretch to dismiss the set Australia batter Josh Inglis at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.

Tim Tector has been named as Stirling’s replacement for the remainder of the tour. Although yet to make his ODI debut, Tector has already represented Ireland in eight T20 Internationals. He also enjoyed a successful stint in the European T20 Premier League last month, adding to his recent experience in the shorter format.

Stirling’s absence represents a significant setback for Ireland, with the opening batter’s experience and leadership central to the side’s plans in the shortest format. His injury also presents an opportunity for Tector to strengthen his case for a more regular role in Ireland’s international setup.

Ireland will now look to regroup for the closing fixtures against Namibia, with the remaining matches offering the squad an opportunity to test its depth and maintain momentum as the tour progresses.
