PNG Legends Bash this Weekend

The Cricket PNG 2011 Pacific MMI Motor Vehicles Insurance Limited "Don't Drink and Drive" Legends Bash will take place this weekend at the home of PNG Cricket, Amini Park.

The 2011 event promises to be bigger and better than ever with six cricketing "legends" from Australia, New Zealand and England set to arrive on the shores of PNG and each join one of the six participating teams.

This year's stars on show will be Brendan Drew (AUS), Ryan Campbell (AUS), Michael Lewis (AUS), Robin Smith (ENG), Simon Doull (NZL) and Scott Styris (NZL). They will also be joined in PNG by Adam Hollioke (AUS) and Wayne Holdsworth (AUS) who will participate in a number of other activities associated with the event.

The event provides the 70 most talented locally based PNG players the opportunity to play alongside current and former test cricket players in local teams named after major partners and sponsors of Cricket PNG.

The participating teams are Pacific MMI, Hebou Construction, Brian Bell & Co, Citifon Limited, BSP Limited and Air Nuigini Limited with all sides captained by a member of the world number 19 ranked PNG Barramundi's side.

Not only is the event a terrific spectacle and opportunity to further promote the rise of cricket in PNG, it also provides tremendous awareness into the negative impact of alcohol abuse. Research in PNG has found that alcohol and speeding are responsible for the majority of the 3,000 motor vehicle accidents annually in the country. High profile events such as this provide the community with valuable information that can assist to lower this alarming statistic.

The event which last year received International Recognition from the ICC by winning the Global Development Award in the category of Best Marketing Event, will be streamed live on the Cricket PNG website.
