"Team India batsman Prithvi Shaw suffered from rotator cuff and labrum injury to his left shoulder while fielding on Day 1 (January 3, 2020) of the Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Karnataka," the BCCI said in its release.

Shaw had sustained the injury while backing up for an overthrow, with an MRI scan thereafter revealing the extent of the injury. He was subsequently sent to the National Cricket in Bengaluru to begin recovery.

"Prithvi is currently under rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and has been ruled out of India A’s two upcoming practice games in New Zealand," the release said. "A call on his participation in the one-day and four-day matches will be taken at a later stage."

The injury potentially puts Shaw's participation in the senior team's tour of New Zealand in doubt. Just over a year ago, he had to be pulled out of the tour of Australia, after he tripped on his ankle, paving the way for Mayank Agarwal's debut and subsequent breakout season.

Shaw, like Agarwal, had enjoyed a rousing start to his Test career scoring a century on debut against West Indies in Rajkot. India's tour of New Zealand begins on 24 January, with a five-match T20I series, before concluding with a two-Test series in February-March. The practice games are scheduled to start from 17 January.
