The outfield of the Basin Reserve had puddles all over it, and reportedly, the players didn't even leave their hotel, so gloomy was the prospect of play.
The umpires, after a scheduled inspection at 3:00 pm local time, decided there was no hope of play, and officially abandoned the day.

Play is scheduled to commence half an hour early on the second morning. However, rain is forecast in Wellington all week, and it’s sure to interrupt the remainder of the match.
New Zealand lead the three-match series 1-0 after securing an innings-and-52-run victory in Hamilton.
