Rain plays spoilsport in opening contest as Ireland, South Africa share CWCSL points

South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma won the toss and elected to field first on a pitch assisting some seam movement. The hosts though got off to a steady start as Paul Stirling and William Porterfield came up with a 41-run opening stand, before Stirling's dismissal.

Porterfield brought up a classy fifty and was looking dangerous along with skipper Andy Balbirnie before he was scalped by Tabraiz Shamsi. Balbirnie then established another stand with Harry Tector, bringing up his half-century, as rain caused a delay in the proceedings.

After the restart, the contest was reduced to 43 overs per side and Ireland lost wickets in quick succession, trying to up the scoring rate. But rain again had the final say as the players walked off the field with Ireland's score at 195/4 in 40.2 overs.

As the chances of play looked slim, the umpires finally called off the contest with the match ending in a no result.
