Ireland's Regan West will undergo an operation after injuring his shoulder and will miss all cricket action until the end of August 2010.

At the first winter training session, team physio Kieran O'Reilly decided there was no point in him trying to play through the pain or put off the operation any longer.

"I have torn two tendons and a cartilage in my right shoulder and will have the operation on January 13. O'Reilly tells me it will be a six-eight month recovery so it will be July or August before I will return," said West on Cricket Ireland's website.

West ended 2009 as Ireland's leading wicket-taker and injured his right shoulder in the ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Kenya in July. His injury comes as a blow to Ireland squad less than a week after Kyle McCallan announced his retirement from the team.
