John Edrich's 82, in the first-ever ODI, was the highest score. It was then broken by DL Amiss, who made the first hundred in 50-over cricket - 103 on debut against Australia on August 24, 1972. Roy Fredericks broke that record inside a year with his 105, which was then broken by David Lloyd's 116 not out against Pakistan a year later in 1974.
Sachin Tendulkar became the first batsman in history to score an ODI double century, a feat he achieved in 2010 against South Africa in Gwalior. Virender Sehwag broke that record with 219 against West Indies in Indore.
Before Tendulkar, Saeed Anwar held the record from 1997 to 2009 until Charles Coventry equalled him.
Glenn Turner of New Zealand owned the record with his 171* against East Africa for 8 years, between 1975 and 1983, when Kapil Dev made 175* against Zimbabwe. Vivian Richards held the record for 12 years, from 31 May 1984 to 21 May 1997, before Anwar's 194 against India in Chennai put him on top of the table.
With ODI cricket, especially batting, having evolved over the years, it remains to be seen how long Rohit's record stands.
