Root sees no harm in Kohli’s mic-drop celebration

England were well set on 215/3 when Root, who had reached 80 with ease, rashly responded to Jonny Bairstow’s call for a second run. Kohli brilliantly ran the England captain out with a direct hit, leaving Root a long way from the crease.

Kohli celebrated passionately before making a mic-drop gesture, referencing Root’s own mic-drop celebration after reaching a hundred in the deciding ODI between the two reams at Headingley earlier in the summer, an act later labelled by Root as “the most embarrassing thing” that he’s done on a cricket field.

Whilst Kohli’s celebration drew some criticism from pundits and on social media, Root saw no harm in it. Indeed, he argued it might be good for the game. “I didn't see it in the middle, I obviously saw it last night at the end of play,” he told Sky Sports before the start of play on day two.

“I actually think it adds to the whole spectacle of Test cricket, it gives a bit of humour to it, and it makes for a very entertaining series for something like that to happen so early on, so we'll see how things pan out over the course of the five Test matches."

Kohli’s run out of Root proved to be the turning point of the day. After his dismissal, England suffered a collapse losing their last seven wickets for 71 runs, ending on 287 all out in the second over of day two with Ravi Ashwin and Mohammed Shami taking four and three wickets respectively.
