Safety and Security Update

Security article

As part of the ICC’s commitment to intelligence led safety and security planning, in conjunction with our independent risk assessors Crisis 24, we produce a quarterly global trends report. This report looks at emerging safety and security trends in the staging of world sport and the potential implications in cricket. In the latest addition of this report three key emerging issues were highlighted:

  • Cybercrime: Cyber threats continue to grow at international and national sporting events, posing a low-to-moderate threat to events and business-as-usual operations.
  • Conflict: The conflict in the Middle East, starting on 28 February, has posed a moderate-to-severe threat to events. However, other regional conflicts have also impacted and are likely to continue affecting Boards and the staging of events in the future. Significant military action and violent protest seem to be becoming more regular geopolitical events with significant consequences for international sport.
  • Climate change and weather events: Severe weather events continue to plague sports posing a low-to-moderate physical threat to events. The likelihood is that climate change will have a growing impact with severe consequences.

These trends are starting to be manifested across world sports; it may be considered that Boards and our valued partners should consider risk and contingency planning to mitigate the potential impacts of these issues.
