Santo Cricket Carnival a Success
The Santo Hardware & LMC Cricket Carnival was a highlight for the 31st Vanuatu Independence opening celebrations in Luganville, Santo.
The cricket carnival was part of the independence celebrations and also commemorated 'Children's Day' which was moved forward by the independence celebrations committee in Luganville and provided activities for children all around Luganville.
The cricket carnival involved a lot of children most of whom had a feel of the bat and ball for the first time in their lives.
Co-sponsored by Santo Hardware and the Luganville Municipal Council, the carnival kicked off after the official parade and speeches.
Over eight hundred (800) people watched the students enjoy the different cricket activities that were on display by students from different schools.
Luganville East (French) and Sarakata Center School senior boy's were the teams that played against each other to showcase the game of cricket. Whilst the game was being played and demonstrated, information regarding the Outreach Cricket Development Program, sponsorship of carnival, general rules of cricket, cricket game structure, cricket equipments, game scores, etc?were continuously being announced over the sound system with kids and adults alike listening with huge interest.
Luganville East was the winner of the Santo Hardware sponsored Independence Carnival scoring 7/48 against Sarakata Centre School to run away with the winner's prize of a lawn mower.
Inb reply Sarakata Center School could only manage 7/18 and walked away with the Luganville Municipal sponsored giveaways.
With high interest from kids, as noted from the independence cricket carnival, the Samna Provincial Cricket Association Development Office will be setting up cricket playing stations every Friday afternoons at the Unity Park for kids and those interested in playing cricket. Parents are advised to encourage their kids to come down to the Unity Park for these free cricket sessions on Fridays at 2:00pm starting Friday 05th August 2011.
Special acknowledgement goes to Santo Hardware and the Luganville Municipal Council for their generous sponsorship towards the Independence Cricket Carnival and also not forgetting the teachers who assisted during this cricket carnival.
The overall Cricket Outreach Development Program is funded by the European Union (EU) and the Australian Government through it's Australian Sports Outreach Program (ASOP).
