Scotland and Bangladesh knock off wins in the ICC Commonwealth Games Qualifier 2022
Here's a round-up of all the action on the second day of the Qualifier.
Malaysia vs Scotland
Scotland beat Malaysia by 31 runs to register their first win in the Commonwealth Games Qualifier 2022. Having opted to bat first after winning the toss, Scotland’s top three did the bulk of the scoring. The openers, Sarah Bryce and Abbi Aitken-Drummond put on 41 in 4.5 overs before Sarah was dismissed for an 18-ball 30.
Captain Kathryn Bryce, who was dismissed for single digits against Sri Lanka yesterday, then combined with Aitken-Drummond to put on a half-century stand that took Scotland past the 100-run mark. Malaysia were set 149 to chase after Kathryn’s brilliant, unbeaten 46-ball 62 studded with seven fours.
Malaysia started out confident, putting on 32 for the opening wicket in quick time, but three wickets in the space of two overs dented their run chase big time. From 46/2, Malaysia succumbed to 48/5 and the target appeared too steep for the middle-order.
Things turned Scotland’s way with off-spinner Katherine Fraser spinning a web around the Malaysian batters. Her four-wicket haul was the backbone of Scotland’s 31-run win, a victory that had no real challenge later in the innings until Intan Jamahidaya, the No.8 batter, made a 31-ball 24.
Brief scores
Scotland beat Malaysia by 31 runs. Scotland 148/5 in 20 Overs; Malaysia 117/8 in 20 Overs.
Player of the Match: Kathryn Bryce
Bangladesh vs Kenya
Nahida Akter’s five-wicket haul helped Bangladesh clean up Kenya for 45 in a run chase of 126. The spinner was impressive with the turn she generated off the surface. Kenya never got off to a great start, losing a flurry of wickets early on before Akter weaved her magic.
Sharon Juma’s 24 off 20 balls was the only notable contribution for Kenya with the bat as they failed to get anywhere close to the target.
Earlier in the game, Kenya opted to bowl first and although the first over leaked 16 runs, the decision was justified when they reduced Bangladesh to 50/6.
However, Salma Khatun and Ritu Moni combined in a game-changing 75-run partnership that put Bangladesh on course for a good total, which eventually proved to be more than enough.
Brief scores
Bangladesh beat Kenya by 80 runs. Bangladesh 125/6 in 20 Overs; Kenya 45 All Out in 12.4 Overs.
Player of the Match: Nahida Akter
