The batters struggled in both innings on a surface that was assisting the seamers at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. Bangladesh were skittled out for only 103 in the first innings, with six of their batters getting out for a duck. They were struggling at 109/6 at one point in the second innings, before the skipper and Nurul Hasan bailed them out to reach a total of 245.

The under-par performance led to them succumbing to a seven-wicket loss in the first Test, with the side now languishing at the bottom of the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 table.

Pinpointing the defeat on their performance in the first session of the match, Shakib said, "I think we could have done better. The thing is that we were always in the recovery mode from the first session of the opening day and we were always behind and we could never go in front in the match and that is regretful."

Addressing the issues with the batting department, Shakib added, "Batting we all know is the area to improve but there is no point saying the same thing.

"I think there are technical problems as well. I don't think we have many technically-sound players. Everyone has technical problems but they will have to find a way out by themselves - about how to stay at the wicket and score runs."

The Bangladesh skipper also stated that improving the performance of the batting unit was a job for the coaching department. "It's not a matter of discussion for me - it's for the coach. If I am coaching and captaining the side too then it's a problem for me. I think it's better if I am doing the job that I am responsible for. I will try to do my duty according to my responsibility," Shakib added.

Bangladesh will hope to bounce back in the second Test of the series, starting June 24 at Gros Islet in St. Lucia.
