Social Media Safety & Awareness
Social media and mobile phones play an important role in our lives. It is acknowledged they are a useful tool for players to use to raise their profile, engage sponsors and promote the game. However, it is important to understand the risk associated with social media and mobile communications; simply, that these are being used by corruptors to facilitate fixing in the game.
Key Tips:
- Consider carefully any contact made to you by people via social media.
- If you have been in contact with someone over a period of time (either online or in person), and you are either suddenly not sure of their motives, or they have started discussing money, betting or fixing – contact the ACU and get us to look into it.
- If you have received a message that is of concern, for example a stranger asking to chat on WhatsApp as they have an opportunity for you to both make money - do not reply screenshot the message and send the details to the ACU to look into.
- You can prevent further contact by blocking the person on the relevant app’s.
- Ensure your phone number is not readily publicised; on Twitter, Facebook or anywhere else online.
- You may wish to consider operating a public Facebook profile that you establish as a sports athlete in order to interact with the public, and a private one for you to engage with friends and family.
- If someone has sent you a message asking for team or match information – they are seeking inside information. Do not respond.
