Sooryavanshi scripts history in first T20I against Zimbabwe

India's teenage sensation, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, etched his name in the T20I record books as he became the youngest ever batter to score a half-century in men's T20Is. 

The youngster registered his maiden T20I fifty off just 18 balls in the first T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare. The knock included four boundaries and as many sixes as India chased down the target of 126 with a little over six overs to spare.

At 15 years and 118 days, Sooryavanshi registered the record, which was earlier held by Louis Bruce from Gibraltar, who had scored a fifty against Malta in 2021, at 16 years, 56 days.

India captain Shreyas Iyer was full of praise for Sooryavanshi after the seven-wicket victory.

"He is fearless, the way he approaches the innings is amazing. He possesses immense confidence when he steps onto the field," Iyer said.

Sooryavanshi had received his maiden T20I call-up against Ireland and England last month.

The left-hander had scores of 14, 13 and 15 in his first three T20Is against England but showed fearless intent and went on attack mode right from ball one against Zimbabwe. 

With the Indian bowlers having restricted the home side to 125/7 in 20 overs, the batter took on both pacers and spinners as the visitors held firm control throughout the series opener.

Sooryavanshi had also scored a stunning 175 (80) at the same venue in the ICC Under-19 World Cup Final in January this year.

This marked India's first T20I victory under Iyer following a winless UK tour and the skipper was understandably thrilled.

"Exceptional. They were tremendous in their execution. Can't be more happier to get my first win," he said.

India will face Zimbabwe in the second T20I on 25 July in Harare.
