South Africa pacemen blew India away in the first One-Day International at Kingsmead on Wednesday.

India went down by a massive 135 runs as Lonwabo Tsotsobe (4-31), Dale Steyn (2-29) and Morne Morkel (2-12) ran through the line-up.

The only batsman to offer any resistance was Virat Kohli (54: 70b, 2x4, 1x6). India slipped down to 43 for four as it chased South Africa's total of 289 for nine.

A 52-run stand between skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Kohli was the only saving grace for the visitors as India was bowled out for 154 in 35.4 overs.

Suresh Raina slammed a 36-ball 32 but it was all too late in the day.

Earlier a century partnership between AB de Villiers and JP Duminy carried South Africa to a total of 289 for nine

De Villiers (76) and Duminy (73) put on 131 for the fourth wicket to lift the home team after slumping to 82 for three after winning the toss.

Graeme Smith (11), Colin Ingram (5) and Hashim Amla (50 off 36 balls) were all caught after playing cross-batted shots.

De Villiers collected seven fours and a six before falling in the 36th over when a pull off part-time off-spinner Rohit Sharma landed in the hands of Harbhajan Singh at deep mid-wicket.

Sharma then trapped Duminy leg-before as the left-hander attempted a reverse sweep.

Left-armer Zaheer Zhan finished with two for 44, fellow paceman Munaf Patel took two for 36 and Sharma picked up two for 30.
