South Africa tear through Windies after de Kock 96

The Proteas were bowled out for 298 by lunch on the second day in St Lucia but by stumps had bowled the West Indies out for 149, with Shai Hope (43) and Jermaine Blackwood (49) the only batters to pass 20 for the hosts.

Resuming the day 218/5, South Africa suffered an early blow when Wiaan Mulder (8) fell to Kemar Roach (3/45) and left Quinton de Kock to bat with the tail.

On 72 when Mulder fell, de Kock found a reliable enough partner in Keshav Maharaj, who stood tall for 52 deliveries, scoring 12 before edging behind to Jason Holder (1/47). That ended a handy 36-run stand and before another run was scored, de Kock edged Kyle Mayers (3/28) to gully to fall for 96.

Denied a second consecutive century, de Kock hit eight fours in his 162-ball stay. A handy 21 not out off 23 balls from Kagiso Rabada took South Africa within touching distance from there, before Mayers and Roach accounted for Anrich Nortje (1) and Lungi Ngidi (1).

The West Indies’ innings got off to the worst possible start as Kraigg Brathwaite strangled Rabada (2/24) down the legside on the first ball of the innings. By the sixth over the West Indies were in disarray at 30/3, as Ngidi (2/27) and Nortje (1/41) removed Kieran Powell (5) and Roston Chase (4) respectively.

It got worse when Mayers (12) edged Keshav Maharaj (2/47) to slip. A 43-run stand between Hope and Blackwood looked to have put the collapse to bed but after Hope had his timber rattled by Ngidi, the wickets fell at regular intervals.

Rabada returned to have Holder (10) caught at gully, before Mulder collected the fantastic figures of 3/1, and the innings was wrapped up when Blackwood fell attempting to sweep Maharaj.
