South Africa U19 registers first victory

The result means South Africa, the dethroned defending champion, will play Ireland in the quarterfinals for the ninth-place playoff, while Scotland takes on New Zealand.

Put in to bat, Scotland struggled right from the outset. Neil Flack (7) and Rory Johnston (5), the openers, were dismissed within four overs as Scotland was reduced to 22 for 2. That became 33 for 4 in the next five overs, after Azeem Dar and Jack Waller also fell to the twosome of Wiaan Mulder and Dayyaan Galiem.

All the while, Owais Shah attempted to keep the South Africans at bay with a 46-ball 13. He finally found some stable company when Finlay McGreath came in and the two dug in to put on 28 for the fifth wicket, taking 13.3 overs to do so.

The stand was eventually broken when Shah was dismissed by Sean Whitehead. That led to another slide. McGreath fell a few overs later, Luke Philander ending his 61-ball knock of 24. Haris Aslam (6) didn’t last long either, but Ryan Brown and Harris Carnegie then resisted for a while, putting on 16 for the eight wicket.

Brown was trapped in front by Tony de Zorri for a 38-ball 11 to break the stand, but Carnegie took charge and put on 28 for the ninth wicket with Mitchell Rao (10 off 28). The late mini partnerships helped Scotland sail past the 100-mark, but Rao was run out and Mohammad Ghaffar lasted just three balls. Carnegie ended unbeaten on a 48-ball 29 to finish as the top-scorer.

The target was no match for a determined South Africa. Smith and Verreynne were equally determined not to lose their wickets. They both scored seven fours, but Smith also smacked two sixes as South Africa completed the chase with ease.
