On this week's ICC Cricket World audio show South Africa bowler Wayne Parnell reflects on his participation in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2008 in Malaysia and talks about what it's like to be performing on the international stage.
Parnell, who guided South Africa to the final two years ago, said: "It took me by surprise when I was offered the captaincy. I had thought if I played well in the under-19 provincial competitions, I would be selected for the squad. But when I was chosen to lead the side, I was really very happy. It was a huge honour and privilege."
Parnell took 18 wickets in Malaysia before making his ODI debut against Australia at Perth last year in January. Since then, he has played in nine ODIs and eight T20Is. On Thursday in the fourth and last Test against England at the Wanderers, he became the 306th player to represent South Africa at the Test level.
The 20-year-old from Port Elizabeth recalled the day he was first selected to play for the Proteas: "I remember clearly I was driving home from a shopping mall when Cricket South Africa selector Mike Proctor called me to tell me that I'd been selected in the ODI and Twenty20 squads and I would be flying to Australia.
"So far in my senior career, I've dismissed Australia's Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey but I'd definitely like to get Sachin Tendulkar's wickets. I think the batsman I fear the most is Virender Sehwag."
The show can be used in whole or part by radio stations that want cricket content, while the public can also download it straight from the ICC website at http://www.icc-cricket.com/media_interactive_zone/podcast.php.
Joining Parnell on this week's show is ICC U19 CWC 2010 tournament director Tim Murdoch who is busy preparing for the event which starts in New Zealand on Friday.
Murdoch said: "We've just finished two days of warm-up matches and are now really looking forward to Friday's start. We're hoping all our planning and preparations come to fruition.
"It has been exciting to watch various Associate and Affiliate qualifying sides play at venues around Christchurch in the last couple of days. I watched Ireland take on the West Indies who must be very disappointed to not have beaten the West Indies."
Apart from the above interviews, this week's ICC Cricket World also includes a round-up of the last seven days in cricket, a look back on the South Africa and England series in a lead up to the start of the final Test and an update on the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings.
The weekly ICC Cricket World audio show runs for 15 minutes and has been put together by the ICC's global broadcast partner ESPN STAR Sports.
