Sri Lanka make late change to ODI squad for Zimbabwe series

Pathum Nissanka was ruled out of the series with a suspected dengue infection and replaced by Shevon Danie

Nissanka has been admitted to the hospital according to Sri Lankan Cricket and was subsequently ruled out of the series. Daniel, a 19-year-old top-order batter, replaces him in the squad.

The squad that was named also has all-rounder and recent limited-overs captain Dasun Shanaka in the final 17-member ODI squad for the three-match series beginning later this week.

While Shanaka was stripped of captaincy, the all-rounder, whose form has been ordinary in recent times, managed to find a place in the shortlisted squad.

An extended preliminary squad was named earlier in the week with Kusal Mendis announced as captain and Asalanka acting as vice-captain. There was, however, no room for Angelo Mathews, who was recalled to the squad midway through the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in India.

Sri Lanka's left-arm pacer aced the Cricket World Cup with 21 wickets to his name.

Wanindu Hasaranga, who was elevated to T20I captaincy recently, returns to the ODI squad after missing the World Cup due to injury, although his participation is subject to fitness. Akila Dananjaya, who last played an ODI in 2021, also makes a return to the squad. Jeffrey Vandersay, Maheesh Theekshana and Dunith Wellalage are the other spin options.

"In the last couple of seasons Akila Dananjaya has been picking up wickets, and we also need a backup plan for the likes of Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga," selector Ajantha Mendis said.

"With the next ODI World Cup in 2027 we need to find a way to give players on the fringes more game time. In domestic cricket the opportunity just isn't there to see him tested like he would be internationally."

Dilshan Madushanka, who had an impressive World Cup, will lead the pace attack that also has Pramod Madushan, Dushmantha Chameera, and a few all-rounders who bowl medium pace.

Batting all-rounder Janith Liyanage, who played three T20Is in 2022, finds a place in the squad and could make his ODI debut.
