Stokes sustained an injury to his left index finger during his time with Rajasthan Royals in the IPL in April. The injury required surgery, and it has now emerged the all-rounder needed a second operation.

"Stokes had two screws and scar tissue removed from the index finger of his left hand," the ECB stated.

"He will now undergo an intensive period of rehabilitation for the next four weeks under the supervision of the ECB's medical team."

Stokes' finger was seen heavily bandaged in an Instagram post on Wednesday.

The development casts further doubt on Stokes' involvement in the upcoming Ashes in Australia – the series will be available to watch live on ICC.tv in select regions – with the all-rounder currently on indefinite leave from all cricket for his mental wellbeing.

Stokes missed England's home Test series against New Zealand and India during his indefinite break, as well as a limited-over series against Sri Lanka.

The first Ashes Test is set to begin in Brisbane on 8 December.
