Strauss, Pietersen miss centuries in draw

New captain Andrew Strauss and deposed skipper Kevin Pietersen fell just short of centuries as England inevitably drew with West Indies A at Warner Park on Saturday.

The tourists, preparing for Wednesday's first Test against West Indies in Jamaica, replied to the host's formidable 574-8 declared with 414 all-out in the final session.

West Indies A, opting not to enforce the follow on, reached 16 without loss in its second innings as the three-day match ended tamely.

Strauss, 59 overnight, fell for 97 while Pietersen, who resumed on 12, was dismissed soon afterward for 90.

The pair added 123 for the third wicket after England continued from 134-2.

Paul Collingwood also sparkled with a forthright 82.

But Owais Shah, a century-maker in the tour-opener against St. Kitts and Nevis six days ago, failed when he was leg before for 9.

Pacer Kevin McClean took 3-51 while leg-spinner Gavin Wallace claimed 3-149.

Wallace ended the Strauss-Pietersen partnership midway through the opening session when both seemed set for three figures.

Strauss was three away when he was bowled by a leg-break as he missed a drive. The left-hander hit 16 fours and a six off 135 balls.

Ten runs later, Pietersen was also bowled as he swung across the line at Amit Jaggernauth, an off-spinner who was in the West Indies squad for the first Test. Pietersen smashed 17 boundaries off just 71 deliveries.

Shah also fell just before lunch, leg-before to Jaggernauth as England slumped to 270-5.

Collingwood dominated the latter part of the innings, striking five fours and three sixes before he was eighth out to McClean.

Collingwood added 80 for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper Matt Prior, who was run out - for the second time on tour - for 36.
