Suva: Defending Champions Score First Round Win

Defending champions Laucala Bay Secondary and John Wesley College were first round winners as the Suva Secondary Schools cricket competition got underway at Albert Park on Wednesday.

The competition, which is back after a two-year hiatus, involves six Suva teams and is running throughout first term with a final on April 20.

Laucala Bay will be looking to defend their title and got off to a strong start with a six-wicket victory against Marist Brothers High.

Metui Daucakacaka top-scored with 19 as Laucala Bay reached Marist?s total of 35 from just five overs.

Meanwhile John Wesley College will also be tough to beat this term after they proved too strong for International Secondary, winning by 66 runs.

Number six batsman Jone Koroi led the way for John Wesley with a well-crafted 67 not out as the side posted 7-117 off their 15 overs.
International were then bowled out for 51 off 10 overs.

Cricket Fiji development manager Jo Rika said he was impressed with the commitment the schools were showing to the tournament.

"The four teams that played on Wednesday were all well prepared and I think interest in the competition is high," Rika said.

"It's great to give these students a chance to play regular cricket and improve their skills."

The competition will run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons with the next game between Laucala Bay 2 and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial on
Monday.
